‘Drown him’ case: Suspects named By Andrew King POLICE HAVE been given names of suspects who chanted “drown him” during a brutal assault on a teenager. The 15-year-old was attacked by a group in Rolleston after the fireworks display on November 4. They dragged him to a water race and held his head under water. Some in the group chanted “drown him”. The victim is a talented sportsman and was back on the sports field at the weekend, his mother, who did not want to be named,

said yesterday. Many people have posted about the incident online, including friends of the victim who believe they know who the attackers were, his mother said. Names had been given to the police. A friend of the family posted a message on their behalf, which received more than 600 reactions and a number of comments offering support and condemning the attack. The 15-year-old’s mother said the support has been amazing.

It took more than an hour-anda-half to finish shopping at the supermarket because people kept stopping her. “It was amazing to see how many people came up to us,” she said. But police are saying little publicly about finding the offenders. Detective Senior Sergeant Mike Ford told the Selwyn Times yesterday there was no update. Inquiries are ongoing, he said. The four alleged offenders are all teenagers, the Selwyn Times has been told.

The attack appears to have been robbery-motivated. Four youths approached the teenager on Tennyson St, Rolleston, at about 10.30pm and demanded his cap. When he refused to hand it over, he was attacked. The group repeatedly punched him and kicked him on the ground. They dragged him to a nearby water drain and held his head under the water. He eventually broke free and attempted to run home. His mother said he collapsed

near their house and caught the attention of the neighbour’s who brought him home. “I didn’t recognise him, I thought ‘who the hell are you’,” she said. “He couldn’t talk and his mouth was full of blood.” They called 111 and he was taken to Christchurch Hospital. When a pack of dogs chance across a lone animal, or person for that matter, they instinctively grow in confidence and aggression. Usually all it takes for the attack button to be pushed is for one or two of the dogs to push the envelope a bit further than normal, particularly when the lone animal shows fear or is pushed to the ground. The same can be said of the teenagers (see page 1) who attacked a 15-year-old in Rolleston. Not satisfied with giving him a towelling, he was dragged to a drain and had his head held under water. Council takes action to ensure playgrounds are safe

By Georgia O’Connor-Harding A CRACKDOWN on the safety of playground equipment across the district is to get under way to ensure health and safety standards are met. More than 70 playgrounds are managed by the district council. A report was put forward to the district council’s audit and risk subcommittee recently. In the report, Sam Broughton bench-marking tool Yardstick measured Selwyn as having about eight playgrounds per 1000 children under the age of 15. This compares to the rest of the country which has a median of three playgrounds per 1000 children. It said, while this provides a high level of services for the district, it comes with increased inspection, maintenance, compliance and management costs. Lincoln hospitality scoops top award LINCOLN Hospitality Ltd – Catering has been recognised as the overall winner for the Selwyn Responsible Business Awards. The Lincoln Envirotown Trust held its awards celebrating Selwyn businesses’ commitment to environmental sustainability and community involvement Lincoln University Early Childhood Centre won the new special “educators” trophy donated by the Biological Husbandry Unit Organics Trust. While the award ceremonies had been previously held in different areas, it was the first time the whole district came together to receive recognition for their work. The event was held at the Rolleston Community Centre lounge. Lincoln Envirotown trustee Sue Jarvis said there were two excellent presentations to encourage businesses to do more. Presentations were made by James McDonald of Yealands Wineries and Martin and Lisa Bennett of The Laboratory in Lincoln. Mr McDonald gave an insight into the myriad of steps that they have taken to become a sustainable enterprise.

There were hurdles along the way – the attempt to use guinea pigs to be non-fuel burning “mowers” was met with glee by the hawk population. The guinea pigs had to be replaced with miniature sheep imported at great expense. The Laboratory Lincoln dis-

Dr Jarvis said she would also like to thank Dave Fitzjohn and the trust for all their hard work and the district council for its financial support. “It was a true celebration of the wonderful things businesses are doing alongside providing us with our goods and services,” Dr Jarvis said. Do you have constant buzz or ringing in your ears or head? Tinnitus affects up to 15 per cent of the population yet there is a persistent myth that nothing can be done to treat it, says audiologist Brenna Sincock.

In addition to noise-induced hearing loss, tinnitus can also result from buildup of earwax, ear infections, temporary exposure to loud sounds, and age-related hearing loss.

Benner’s doctorate in audiology from Pennsylvania’s Bloomsburg University is complemented by specialist work in neurological disorders of the ear, and seats for the November 20 and 21 seminars are expected to fill quickly. Tinnitus, characterised by noises heard in the ear or head, is for a minority of sufferers extremely bothersome. Unfortunately, many people delay seeking help due to a perception there is no way to alleviate the condition, Brenna says. “People need to know there are solutions,” she says. “The technology has come so far and a great percentage of people experience huge relief now due to this.” While tinnitus is often associated with hearing loss – particularly

noise-related hearing loss – it can also present in otherwise unaffected people, Brenna says. It is not a disease but a symptom, she notes, adding that regardless of the cause, the sooner treatment is provided, the more effective it is.

Dr Benner’s expertise in neurotology follows from a long tenure at an ear, nose and throat practice in the United States. She is passionate about helping people with their hearing and her seminar is sure to inform attendees. “Knowledge is key”, says Brenna. “Our aim is to inform people of their options so they can live without the impact of tinnitus. “

Water races set to close By Georgia O’Connor-Harding THE CLOSURE of water races in Sheffield and Springfield has been described as “death by a thousand cuts” by a district councillor. If you are going to pipe everything and deliver it by the irrigation scheme, how is the biodiversity going to survive?” she said. But her concern received little support from other councillors. Cr Craig Watson said while it could be argued the closures are interfering with future farming, the district council is only clos-

ing down rats and mice, leaving the district with the overall boom of the water race. “We lessen our takes but we increase, maintain our costs . . . This is the right thing to do,” he said. His views were backed by Cr Pat McEvedy who said the decision hasn’t been reached lightly and council has already agreed to this process by helping fund CPW. In June, a report went to the sub-committee to approve consultation over the water race closures.

In Brief DRAFT CEMETERY BYLAW The district council has approved a draft Cemetery Bylaw for public consultation. The draft bylaw, which updates the existing 2011 bylaw, regulates the use and management of district council cemeteries and provides guidance for the public on information such as the purchase of plots, provisions for interments, requirements for placing memorials and keeping graves in order. The district council maintains 19 cemeteries. The proposed bylaw includes some changes to ensure legislative compliance to provide for the comfort and well-being of visitors and to reflect current community needs. Consultation will be open until December 11, with hearings to be held in February next year. LAKE COLERIDGE WATER A boil water notice is in place for properties connected to the Lake Coleridge water supply. The notice was issued on Friday after test results were received showing e. coli levels were above recommended levels. E. coli was detected in the post-UV area of water treatment and no e. coli has been detected in the reticulation zone. The scheme is currently being chlorinated. However, residents are advised to continue boiling water until further notice.

The report put to the district council highlighted the Department of Conservation did not have the resources to go collect the species from the water races free of charge. The water races potentially have longfin eel, Canterbury galaxias, upland bully and freshwater mussels. Cr Nicole Reid said it needs to find a suitable way to collect the fish to protect the species. “That should be a requirement of being able to close that down,” she said. But the district council’s water asset manager Murray England said if DOC can’t do it, a ecologist will, meaning the ratepayer has to fund the fish removal. RELIEF: Residents in Selwyn may not have restrictions on the amount of water they use over summer.

High rainfall may mean no water restrictions

HIGH rainfall throughout the year may mean properties in Selwyn will not have to go on water restrictions over summer. The district council wants to ensure properties connected to its water supplies can have good water service. Asset manager Murray Washington said high rainfall during winter meant the district council is in a good position to meet the increased water demand during summer. “There is no immediate need for mandatory water restrictions,” he said. But Mr Washington said it is asking residents

to consider changing their lawn irrigation timing to help keep the water networks stable. “Water supplies are placed under pressure during summer as many people decide to water their lawns and gardens at the same time,” he said. Residents on district council water supplies are encouraged to water lawns between 9pm-6am or 9am-4pm, as these are times when households use the least water. Residents should avoid irrigating between 6-9am or 4-9pm and check the weather conditions before watering. A district council media

release said watering lawns during the middle of the day, during hot days or when a nor’west wind is blowing, result in a lot of water evaporating. Watering on a cooler overcast day is a better option as it has the opportunity to soak into lawns and gardens. If demand for water increases over summer, water restrictions may be introduced requiring households to avoid watering lawns at specific times. Summer water restrictions are commonly used in New Zealand as a way to manage demand for water.

More than 100 Highland dancers, 12 pipe bands, 58 solo pipers and drummers, 18 wool spinners, 140 tuggers, 68 junior warriors, six shooters and 20 heavy athletes competed in the seventh annual games. While moody skies initially hung over the Hororata Domain, as the crowd stood for the Armistice Day remembrance the clouds soon parted with the sun shining through. The Malvern Schools combined Kapa Haka group then welcomed chieftain MP for Selwyn Amy Adams with a stirring performance. The Gough CAT Oceania Heavyweight Championship was won by Jono MacFarlane,

who also broke a field record tossing the 56lb weight over a 15.5 foot bar. The women’s Gough CAT Amateur Championship was won by Julie Stechman and the men’s was taken out by David Jackways both also from New Zealand. Thousands of people took on the “Have A Go” challenges and were entertained with numerous performances around the grounds in the stalls. Event manager Cindy Driscoll said this would not be possible without the help of more than 200 volunteers, competitors, partners, stall holders, suppliers and the visitors. “The Hororata Community Trust thanks, everyone who makes our games truly special,” she said.

Street names causing friction By Georgia O’Connor-Harding SELWYN’S POLICY for naming newly built roads has come under scrutiny after more effort than usual went into deciding a name for a road in Rolleston last week. The district council was tasked with approving a new name for a road in the Twyn Visions Ltd subdivision at its meeting on Wednesday. The three names to choose from were Ruby Jean Drive, Jean Archie Drive Mark and Twyn ViAlexander sions Drive. The options were approved by Land Information New Zealand. But not everyone was on the same page Grant Miller when it came to choosing their preferred name. Councillor Mark Alexander was the first to raise concerns over the name of Ruby Jean Drive due the township already

having a road called Ruby Drive. “Two roads beginning with Ruby in the same township has potential for confusion of emergency services and if we can do our best to avoid that confusion we should,” he said. He said it should be named Jean Archie Drive. His stance was supported by

district councillor Craig Watson. Councillors Nicole Reid and Debra Hasson raised concerns about the lack of information provided on the background behind the names. Cr Hasson suggested the district council may need to look into its naming policy. “We are starting to get lots

of double barrel names . . . I understand it is named after a subdivision. Why couldn’t it just be Twyn Drive or Vision Drive, something more simple,” she said. But Cr Alexander said he was not a fan of Twyn Visions Drive. He said the spelling would always create confusion and he did

not favour developers naming roads after themselves. But councillor Grant Miller said these are significant subdivisions adding a lot to the community. “It is the least we can do if it suits them,” he said. Cr Miller said while it would be good to get an explanation on the background on the names, developers are usually trying to honour a significant relation or person. But Deputy Mayor Malcolm Lyall said: “I would just like to remind Cr Miller the developers might put a lot of money into our subdivision but they also take a lot of money out.” But the argument brought a splash of humour to the table with councillor Pat McEvedy describing the debate as “turning into a farce” and Mayor Sam Broughton joking it was good to see what items on the agenda were most hotly debated. Drivers should stop at busy Tai Tapu intersection By Georgia O’Connor-Harding MOTORISTS ARE being urged to stop at a busy intersection in Tai Tapu. Police have assessed the intersection of Old Tai Tapu Rd and Christchurch Akaroa Rd following complaints of poor visibility and motorists failing to stop. Senior Sergeant Pete Stills recently drove to the intersection to observe. “My attitude was if you stop and look, the visibility was sufficient. One of the issues of not coming to a complete stop is you cut down your time, you cut down your ability to have a good look,” he said. The Tai Tapu Community Association has been working to resolve the issues for more than a year. But the committee’s chairman Gerald Carter said he could not comment on the resolutions as it is for the New Zealand Transport Agency and the district council to comment on. The district council’s asset engineer Mark Chamberlain said it was not aware of any submissions made in the past 12 months on the intersection.

It previously had a speed indicator on Lincoln Tai Tapu Rd which turns into Old Tai Tapu Rd at the intersection as part of four signs rotated throughout the district. But it does not have plans to install more. NZTA traffic safety engineer David Scarlet said there are already speed indicator devices within the township at the approaches to the school. It comes as concerns were raised over the safety of large groups of cyclists in the area are assembling near The Store before embarking on their cycle trip. A resident, who did not wish to be named, said on a recent Sunday morning there were cyclists scattered across the road and they did not seem to have consideration for other people using the road. Ellesmere students step up SCHOOLS ELLESMERE COLLEGE has chosen its new leadership team for the next year. Fylgia Romero and Iain Wright have been named the school’s new head students with Matt Riches and Pip Prendergast deputy head students. Fylgia has been involved in the leadership of many school activities, including the student council, the student well-being team, World Vision, music and public speaking. Administration support teacher Lindsay Cook said she is passionate about helping bring positive changes to the lives of young people and unity between different cultures and people. Outside of school, Fylgia is active in Youth for Christ where she has relationships with young people from throughout Canterbury. and athletics. He also plays basketball, tennis and indoor football. Deputy head student Matt likes to be actively involved in decision-making, takes part in public speaking and has had success in speech competitions since year 4.

In the past, he helped organise significant fundraising ventures. He was active in the school’s enhancing excellence programme and helped create a booklet to transition year 7 students into the college. In his new role, Matt hopes to make the transition as easy as possible for new students into the school. Matt coaches a basketball team and received academic blue for level one NCEA. Fellow deputy head student Pip has a keen interest in sport. In year 11, she gained an NCEA level one excellence endorsement and is on track to achieve the same in level two this year. Her sports include girls rugby, cricket and swimming. Through her enthusiasm, she has tried to encourage other girls to become involved in sport and has seen considerable growth in girls rugby in recent years. In 2016, she captained the under-15 forward foundation rugby team and coached the team in 2017. Pupils make crossing the roads around Springston School safer SPRINGSTON SCHOOL pupils have taken to the street to learn more about road safety. Police school community officer, Constable Rick Groen, was instructing pupils on road safety at a kea crossing outside the school recently. Pupils have been learning how to operate patrols across kea

crossings. Taking part in the school patrol involves members to extend stop signs onto the road in both directions, which signal approaching drivers to stop. Once the traffic is slowing or has stopped, the patrol signals to waiting pedestrians that it’s safe to cross the road.

Patrol members undergo a full day’s training, comprising of theory in the classroom followed by practical work on the street. Once qualified, patrollers are given a refresher course after two to three months and stay with the patrol for a minimum of one, and up to three, years.

Garden waste and scrap metal day A Garden waste and scrap metal drop-off day will take place in Ellesmere on Saturday 25 November, 10am–4pm at Cemetery Pit, 240 Southbridge Leeston Road. This is a good chance to clean up your backyard and garden and drop off garden waste and scrap metal to a local collection point. Garden prunings, tree trimmings and weeds will be accepted, as well as metals, bicycles, BBQs, small appliances, whiteware, tins, pots and pans. We don’t accept general rubbish, flax, cabbage tree leaves, trees/branches over 10cm diameter, gas bottles, items containing oil/fuel, TVs, or tyres. Please separate metal and garden waste. Only household amounts of garden waste will be accepted (not commercial volumes). Scrap metal drop off is free. Garden waste costs $5 per car, $10 per ute or single axle trailer or $15 per twin axle trailer. Cash only (no EFTPOS). Proceeds from gate fees will be donated to the Ellesmere Heritage Park. We have been made aware of baleage being stored on roadsides across the district. We would like to remind farmers that it is an offence under the Traffic and Parking Bylaw to store baleage on road verges. Failure to comply with this can result in a fine of up to $1,500. Summer is on its way, and we want to ensure properties connected to Council water supplies can enjoy good water service during the warmer time of year. High rainfall during winter means the Council is in a good position to meet increased water demand during summer, with no immediate need for mandatory water restrictions. However, we do ask residents to consider changing their lawn irrigation timing to help keep the water networks stable. Water supplies are placed under pressure during summer as many people decide to water their lawns and gardens at the same time.

Show Day Council services Council service centres and libraries, Rolleston Community Centre and Lincoln Event Centre will be closed on Canterbury Anniversary Day (Friday 17 November). Rubbish and recycling collection will occur as normal.

So that we can continue to supply households with water over summer, and to help conserve water, we are recommending that residents on Council water supplies try to water lawns between 9am– 4pm and 9pm–6am (most recommended). These are times when households use the least water.

The Selwyn Aquatic Centre is open from 8am–8pm.

If demand for water increases over summer, water restrictions may be introduced requiring households to avoid watering lawns at specific times. Summer water restrictions are commonly used in New Zealand as a way to manage demand for water.

On the roads this week Reseals will be carried out on Burneys Road, Chamberlains Road, Hodgens Drive, Ashley Dene Road and Lincoln Tai Tapu Road. Digout repairs will be carried out on Hororata Road. When to water your lawn or garden The best time to irrigate is between 9pm– 6am, or alternatively between 9am–4pm. Avoid irrigating between 6–9am or 4–9pm.

Kerb and channel works, footpath and KEA crossing construction will be occurring on Weedons Ross Road in West Melton. Traffic delays and minor detours may be in place during the construction period. Access to the local shopping centre, pre-school and primary school will be available at all times. These works are expected to last until early December.

Project progress snapshots West Melton Community and Recreation Centre Construction of the new $5.8 million West Melton Community and Recreation Centre is planned to begin at the end of this month. The new 1900m2 building will be a modern facility for the fast-growing West Melton area. The building’s foundation is currently being prepared, with construction expected to be completed at the end of 2018.

Tai Tapu community facilities taking shape Walls have been erected and the roof is about to go on at the new Tai Tapu Community Centre and it’s on track to be completed by June 2018. This facility, located at Rhodes Domain, is multi-purpose in nature and will be used for meetings, social events and functions as well as providing a venue for local sports groups. The new Playcentre and associated playground on the old hall site in Tai Tapu township is completed and up and running.

Foster Park carparks The Foster Park and Aquatic Centre carparks on Broadlands Drive have been completed. Users of these facilities can now take their pick of 190 free spaces. Both carparks have designated drop-off areas and space for buses.

Envirotown chair sought SELWYN-WIDE organisation Lincoln Envirotown Trust is on the hunt for a new trustee and chair for its organisation. It comes after its current chairwoman Sam Rowland decided to resign. The trust aims to promote sustainability and carries out projects, initiatives and events with sustainability themes throughout the district. Ms Rowland has been involved with the trust since it first started in 2005 Lincoln Envirotown trustee Dr Sue Jarvis said Ms Rowland has done an amazing job as chair, especially leading the second BioBlitz. The organisation is made up of a team of trustees, committee members and paid employees. Some of the trust’s activities includes Responsible Business Awards, Lincoln Community Gardens, Selwyn Timebank, battery recycling, native planting and education. Book identifies Polynesian origins A topic at Pan Pacific conferences has been where Polynesian people originated and a number of scientists have explored this question. By 1961, solid evidence backed Polynesians as the first people to live in the Pacific. Part of the Austronesian family, Polynesians have been linked indigenously and genetically to the people of Southeast Asia, Taiwan and Madagascar. Recent research carried out, including that by local Historian Cedric Livingstone, points to a strong connection between the Polynesian people and South Africa, Egypt and Madagascar. As a child, Cedric lived on the other side of the fence from the Porangahau Pa and became inextricably linked to its people through a Tapu placed over him that protected him and his family, and bestowed the role of keeper of the secrets and Māori history. Māori elders later requested him to find their homeland. In researching where New Zealand Polynesians originated, Cedric believes the journey began on the veldt of South Africa. Indications of this are: the Poi food paste eaten there, which is a traditional dish of Polynesians; language similarities; Lapita pottery; canoe design; and similarity between Māori Tukutuku panels and clothing of the time. In his research, Cedric has found many similar representations which are recorded in his book ‘The Origin of the Polynesians’. The book explores the discovery of the Polynesians’ homeland and the route the pre-Polynesians/ Austronesian Māoris used to get to the Pacific some 3,300 years ago. Starting with the realisation that a Māori woman in New Zealand was called Titihuia,

named after a little insect eating bird only found on the veldt of South Africa – the Titihuia, Cedric believes a catastrophic event on the veldt caused various tribes to flee to the island of Madagascar where they developed a common language. He suggests there was further migration north to Egypt where words of that language correspond with Māori, for example Ra meaning sun or the term for great prestige, ah-mana (shortened to mana).

Visiting Parliament, the Reserve Bank of New Zealand and the Space Place at Carter Observatory were some of the fun activities the pupils took part in. Promotions and marketing officer Rita Spadoni said visiting the city gave the pupils a wider outlook of the country. They also cycled the 20km Rimutaka Rail Trail before having a swim in the Hutt River. The pupils have spent the last two years fundraising to travel. While it is a new experience sitting in the opposition benches, I remain incredibly proud to be representing Selwyn once again and will continue to focus on the issues that matter to our communities. Canterbury was wellrepresented under the previous Government with a number of cabinet ministers hailing from this region. Furthermore, both Sir John Key and Leader of the Opposition Bill English grew up in the South Island. Unfortunately, the new Government has only one Canterbury-based minister in the new Cabinet, which is where the key decisions

Our region will still have a strong voice in Parliament, however, as I am joined by many National colleagues in the Opposition who are based in Canterbury electorates and have a strong understanding of what matters to Cantabrians going about their daily lives, whether in a small rural settlement or in our larger urban centres. In my own role as the Opposition spokeswoman for justice and workplace relations and safety I am already concerned at the direction that the new Government is taking in announcing its intention to abolish the 90-day trial period for new employees. I have spoken to many small business owners around Selwyn over the past few years and they have told me that this legislation has encouraged them to take a risk in hiring a new staff member,

particularly a young and inexperienced one. In most cases, the new staff member has worked out well and proven to be an asset to their business. However, if the staff member does not perform satisfactorily, the employer is able to end the employment relationship with notice and after having given the employee appropriate feedback and the opportunity to improve. The 90-day trial period is not just a useful tool for small business owners but is also appreciated by many employees because it gives them the opportunity to decide if a new job is really suited to them before committing to it long-term. •HAVE YOUR SAY: What do you think of plans to abolish the 90-day trial period for employees? Kirkwood Intermediate Opportunities

At Kirkwood we are very proud of our children and their achievements, here at Kirkwood. Our pupils have many opportunities to participate in a wide range of education activities including Technology; ICT; Music; Drama; Education Outside The Classroom; Leadership roles; Camps; Academic challenges; and Sports. Our pupils develop a wide range of skills which helps them develop educationally, socially, emotionally and physically during their time with us. Just a few of the opportunities our pupils have experienced this year are as follows:

China Trip

Sports

Education New Zealand supported our trip to China this year. Our China Sister School, Chengdu Bilingual Experimental School, organised homestays and schooling for our pupils. Emma, Kendall, Ashtyn, Dante and Grace had the most amazing experience while they were away. They really enjoyed experiencing new sights, sounds, tasting different types of food and learning about the culture and people of China.

We participate in a large variety of sports including: Netball; Football; Cross Country; Skiing; Swimming; Rugby; Basketball; Waterpolo; Touch Rugby; Korf Ball; Table Tennis; Badminton; Athletics and Gymnastics. We also compete in the Canterbury Association of Intermediate and Middle Schooling competitions. Our school is well known for the courtesy, co-operation and sportsmanship of our teams and we value this highly. Some of the highlights this year are as follows:

Education Outside the Classroom

Bowls Tournament - we had 5 of 6 teams finish in the top three for their categories and one team winning theirs;

We visit many different places within our community such as Canterbury Museum, Riccarton House and the Art Gallery. We also offer class camps for our Year 7 and Year 8 pupils. This year our Year 7’s camped at Purau Bay where they experienced canoeing, abseiling and camping skills, along with getting to know their class and developing friendships.

Boys’ Basketball team won their competition for the 4th year in a row in the Friday night competition; Girls’ Basketball team was awarded the fair play award for the South Island Tournament;

Our Year 8 pupils have just returned from the Otago Rail Trail and Wellington camps. These camps both provide great opportunities for learning and personal development.

Kirkwood Badminton Team finished 3rd in the South Island Tournament; Table Tennis Kirkwood Team finished 3rd in the Winter Weekly Sport.

Technology & ICT

School Production

Our on-site technology centre provides our pupils with a range of creative learning experiences in different areas: Foods; Electronics and Materials (metal, wood, fabric and plastic). Our pupils have created a large variety of work this year. We also participate in Robofest, Future in Tech programme, Food competitions, Robotics, EPro8, 3D printing, Upcycling and Maori Carving.

Every second year we produce a school performance for all interested pupils. This year our production was called ‘Off White and the Seven Scaffolders’.

Many of our pupils have been selected to represent Canterbury and/or have been selected for the Nationals in various sports which makes our school proud.

Programmes focus on Planning for Practice, Brief Development and Outcome Evaluation. We have pods of touch screen laptops, ordinary laptops and Chromebooks for classroom use to enable pupils to develop their skills. Pupils are also welcome to bring their own technology. More pupils are doing this each year. We recommend that parents check which devices are used at the High School they think their children will be attending.

Blues Awards • Outstanding achievements, whether they are personal or at school, are celebrated via our Blues Awards system. • Our students can achieve a Blues Award in various areas such as Cultural, Sports and Academic. • An Outstanding Elite Blues Award may be achieved if a student has achieved an Academic, Cultural and a Sporting Blue. • There are quite strict criteria for receiving a Blue and these are outlined on our website www.kirkwood.school.nz

Backyard Critters Harvestmen – alien-like arachnids HARVESTMEN are arachnids along with spiders, scorpions, pseudoscorpions, ticks and mites. As many as 6500 species of harvestmen are known worldwide. Harvestmen differ from spiders, having only two eyes, as opposed to six or eight in spiders. Spider abdomens are easy to differentiate from the rest of the body, whereas in harvestmen, the abdomen is fused and difficult to distinguish. Harvestmen also lack the silk-producing organs and poison glands that are present in spiders. The European harvestmen (Phalangium opilio), sometimes called daddy-long-legs, is the most common harvestmen worldwide and one of the more common invertebrates found in New Zealand vegetable gardens. You only need to pull a few weeds out and these longlegged critters will be scuttling for cover. The adult European harvestmen body is 4-9 mm in length and grey to brown in colour. They have eight very long

THE DISTRICT council and the Malvern Community Board are encouraging residents to get involved in sister city projects. Selwyn has five international sister city relationships with opportunities for Selwyn residents to be involved in China, Japan, Indonesia and the United States. Sister cities projects include Rewi Alley celebrations in Springfield in December as well as visits to China, Japan and Indonesia next year. Sister city committee chairwoman Allison Rosanowski said a celebration is planned at Springfield in December, to mark the 120th anniversary of Rewi Alley’s birth. “We’re delighted to be welcoming more than 80 guests from China, including six from our sister city, at the celebration,” she said. The commemorative event will be held at the Rewi Alley Memorial in Springfield on Saturday, December 2 at 2pm. Patrolling the community Malvern Community Patrol Committee member Ian Dampier writes about what the committee has been up to in the last few weeks and road safety issues in the area AS WE rapidly come towards the end of our fourth year of operation, the Malvern Community Patrol continues to patrol the wider communities of the Malvern district responding to various situation as we find them. We continue to mount both rostered and irregular patrols day and night and respond to situations throughout the Malvern district as required. The vast majority of the community continue to be overwhelmingly supportive of our organisation and its activities and the detractors are very much in the minority, and often our target audience. To those individuals who would say that our activities should be the area of the police, and only the police, we would respond by saying that community problems require community initiatives and

community solutions. Operating under the umbrella of the police, CPNZ provides that structured community response. That said, we do not see ourselves as anything other than what we are, nor are we setting ourselves up as something we are not. We simply see ourselves as a community-based volunteer service that assists where possible and liaises with other agencies to provide additional and, when necessary, a professional response. Two weeks ago, the patrol founds itself assisting the Darfield police and two locals to move half a dozen Aberdeen Angus calves off State Highway 73 in the hours of darkness that were causing chaos and represented a serious risk to traffic. The previous week the patrol

responded in support of the Darfield police to reports of youths throwing stones at trains as they passed through Darfield. On the issue of road safety, while a significant element of road users continue to decry the police for issuing infringement notices and fines for breaches of the road traffic regulations and labelling this as “revenue

gathering”, the Malvern Community Patrol is alarmed at the poor standard of driving on the districts roads. There is little wonder that Selwyn road accident statistics feature among the highest in the country as drivers continue to fail to acknowledge the formula of factors contributing to road accidents and blatantly ignore

the traffic regulations. This includes failure to stop, failure to give-way, and cellphone use while operating a motor vehicle. Five minutes of observation at any of the intersections controlled by stop signs in Darfield should lead any casual observer to wonder how much consideration his or her fellow road users have for the safety of other road users. At least 50 per cent of drivers fail to abide by the letter of the law, instead preferring to treat the intersection as a “giveway”. One of the other causative factors in road traffic accidents is cellphone use. A prime example is the number of parents arriving to drop off their children at the pre-school on South Tce or at Darfield Primary School on Ross St. In the family motor vehicle while on the phone defies belief. Why would you? What on earth would possesses any adult to be driving their most treasured and vulnerable family members to day care while text messaging or talking on a mobile phone?

Punch costs prop $10,000 By Rob Kidd A PROMISING Lincoln University and Canterbury rugby player has been ordered to pay a student $10,000 after a brawl. Joel Nikoli Hintz, 21, pleaded guilty to a charge of injuring by unlawful act when he appeared before the Dunedin District Court last week. In August, the big front-rower was named in the Canterbury squad which successfully defended the Ranfurly Shield in two pre-season games against Wanganui and Mid-Canterbury. He’s also a former weightlifting world champion and played for the Hawkins Trophy winning Lincoln University side. But hanging over him during those matches was the prospect of a conviction that could limit his future sporting endeavours. On April 4, Hintz and friends went to Dunedin as part of their course at Lincoln University. They were socialising at a student party in Queen St. The defendant saw two men wrestling in the backyard of the property. ‘’Without warning he punched the victim once in the mouth with a closed fist,’’ a police summary said. Counsel Anne Stevens said her client had not attacked the man

completely out of the blue, as court documents suggested. ‘’He genuinely thought he was helping someone, but he misread the situation,’’ she said. Hintz told police he thought

the men were fighting, and as he tried to separate them, the victim threw a punch at him to which he reacted. However, the injured man denied that was the case.

The victim – an Australian man who was in the country studying, and also played rugby – suffered damage to an incisor tooth, which caused the tooth to die.

He required a titanium implant and a false tooth to be fitted, Sergeant Chris George said. The estimated cost of the dental work was $12,000. The figure surprised Mrs Stevens, who had previously been informed of a smaller sum. A final cost would only be known in March next year, the court heard. Judge John Macdonald first indicated the sentencing should be adjourned for the issue to be clarified but was later persuaded to continue. Mrs Stevens said Hintz had $5000 available for the victim but could borrow more. He would suffer significantly with a conviction on his record, she said, through the inevitable hurdles it would place for overseas travel. As well as rugby, Hintz had also tasted success in weightlifting when he went to the world championships in Johannesburg in 2014 as a teenager. He blitzed the competition and set a record in his weight class, according to reports at the time. Judge Macdonald acknowledged the defendant was ‘’a man of promise’’ and the conviction was the first blemish on his record. Hintz was ordered to pay the victim $10,000 (half now, half in a month) as well as court costs of $130. - Otago Daily Times

Darfield High come close to ultimate frisbee title By Andrew King DARFIELD HIGH finished second in the inaugural South Island secondary school ultimate frisbee championships. Competing against five other teams at Centennial Park in Spreydon, Darfield met Cashmere in the final of the compeititon known as the ‘Ultimate Champs’. Shirley Boys’ High, Riccarton High, a combined team and a second team from Darfield were also involved in the competition. Cashmere’s Gordon Forrest was named the most spirited player in the compeititon, Riccarton’s Ben Cruse was the men’s MVP and Darfield’s Stephanie McKenzie was the women’s MVP. Shirley Boys’ High coach Scott Edwards also helped coach the Cashmere side and said it was a fantastic event and great to grow the sport. “In the last two years, the high school scene has grown a lot. There were a lot of parents that came down to watch and all the players hung around to watch the final,” he said. He said with no official tournament in the South Island, it was good to get something like this off the ground to keep up with their North Island counterparts.

So what is ultimate frisbee? •Normally, it is played on a 70m x 50m field with seven players on each team. •The goal is to get the frisbee into the opposition’s ‘end zone’ to score a point. •The first team to 13 wins. •Teams can be made up of both men and women. •Each game runs for 45min. •The Ultimate Champs were played with only five-aside, so the field dimensions were shortened to 50m x 20m, with 30min pool games and 45min semis and finals.

Weedons move up country cricket table WEEDONS MOVED into the top four of the premier one-day country cricket competition with a win over Lincoln at the weekend, while Leeston Southbridge also took victory to remain unbeaten after six rounds. Lincoln struggled batting first for the second week running at Lincoln Domain, this time against Weedons, which went on to win the match by two wickets. Jeremy Benton played well for 46 off 92 balls, and Dave McClelland chipped in with 25, but there were no other substantial contributions and Lincoln were all out for 126 in the penultimate over. Opener James Richards anchored the Weedons chase with 38 off 100 balls. But when Richards was removed by Arthur Paterson in the 35th over, they still needed 23 runs to win, with four wickets in hand. Batting at No 8, Tom Suyker came in to strike some lofty balls and carry Weedons over the line for a two wicket win. Leeston-Southbridge maintained their unbeaten record this season after clinically dispatching defending champions Sefton. Leeston-Southbridge won the toss at Sefton Domain and opted to bowl on what was described as a ‘tennis ball bouncy’, uneven and slow pitch. The outfield was also long, making it a good day to be a bowler.

Consider growing cucumbers By Henri Ham I OFTEN hear gardeners say nothing beats eating home-grown fruit and vegetables. In fact, I say the same thing myself. And if I had to pick one plant that this really rings true for – I would pick cucumber. The cucumbers we have grown in the last few seasons have been crisp, juicy, cool, delicious and would, no question, beat store-bought cucumber by miles any time. So, if you only plant one vegetable this season, though technically a fruit, I strongly recommend you consider cucumber. And don’t stop with just telegraph cucumber (the long, skinny one most commonly found in the supermarket), try growing a selection of cucumbers. Lebanese has tender, edible skin with sweet, mild-tasting flesh. Short-green is great for growing in smaller gardens as it produces a lot of fruit but only requires one third of the space of other cucumbers. And apple looks much like an apple (opposed to the long look of a telegraph cucumber) and it grows really nicely along the ground. Once you’ve got your plants, it’s time to find a place to plant them. They like a warm, dry and sunny spot to grow in. And most varieties will need a bit of space. Telegraph and short green cucumbers will need to either be staked or grown next to something they can grow up – like a trellis. Plant these varieties around 1m apart so each plant has its own trellis/area to spread over.

Apple cucumbers will happily grow along the ground and are a good companion plant for zucchini as they like the same conditions. For a regular-sized bundle with three seedlings you’ll need an area around 2m x 2m and each seedling should be planted about 1m apart. I like to imagine I’m planting them in the shape of a triangle and each seedling goes on one of the points of the triangle, this way the plants are grouped together but have enough room to spread out.

Dig in some compost or leftover potting mix into the soil to ensure its friable (breaks up) before you plant. To encourage fruiting it’s a good idea to plant your cucumbers (and zucchini) near some bee-attracting plants like lavender or borage. Doing this will help ensure the bees pollinate your plants and as a consequence the fruit develop. If the plants aren’t pollinated properly the flowers will fall off and no fruit will develop. If you’d like to be really sure

they’re pollinated, try touching the pollen on each plant with a paintbrush – this will spread the pollen from one flower to the next. I was once told by someone that you could do the same with an electric toothbrush, minus the toothbrush head. I’m yet to try this approach but would love to hear from anyone who has. In around 10 to 12 weeks you should be able to enjoy the cool and juicy taste of home-grown cucumbers.

By Henri Ham THERE ARE a couple of plants where growers regularly report that they find a little tricky to grow. Coriander is one. Watermelon is another. And the one that always surprises me is basil. Basil is such a great plant to have on hand. And there are so many different varieites available to try, I thought this month I’d share my advice on how to get the best out of your basil and move it off that ‘tricky to grow’ list. Basil loves the heat. So my first piece of advice, is look for the sunniest spot in your garden and that’s where you should put your basil. If the sunniest spot at your place is in your home (for example by a kitchen window), then try growing your basil there. Basil grows really well in pots and can easily be kept inside.

When you’ve found the right spot to grow it just dig a little hole and plant. If you’re growing it in a pot I recommend using a good, general potting mix. My second tip for successful basil is, pick it regularly. If you don’t pick it quick enough it might start to go to seed. If it

does, just pick off any developing flower heads to encourage it to stick to leaf growing. Next, basil needs water but its very important you don’t over-water it. Water it when you plant it and then water it regularly to encourage lots of leaf growth. But, and here’s the

important advice, let it dry out between waterings – don’t let it stay wet. And my last piece of advice is, don’t just stick to sweet basil – try growing cinnamon, Thai, lemon, or one of the other varieties. A good way of sampling the other varieties is by getting a mixed basil bundle which will include a selection of some of the different basil varieties. If you do all of the above, basil will quickly move to your list of favourite, low-maintenance, easy-care plants.

Preparation Getting the ground-work right is an important part of any planting you are doing. It is recommended that you don’t plant new tomatoes in the same spot as last season, or where potatoes were, as there can still be diseases in the soil that can affect the growth of your new plant. Prepare existing beds with Organic Compost and Sheep Pellets, and Intelligro Tomato Fertiliser. You can then add our South-Hort Tomato Mix to the top layer to enhance the growing environment. If you are planting in pots, use the Tomato Mix straight into the pot, no need to add fertiliser prior to planting.

Dig a hole twice the size of the root ball of your tomato plant. Loosen the root ball and gently place it in the centre. Fill the hole with the remaining mix, and press gently around the base of the plant. Tie the tomato to the stake using plant ties. If you haven’t got any of these, old pantyhose work a treat too. Once tied, give the plant a good watering.

Fertilising and Watering Tomatoes need a lot of nutrients to sustain healthy growth and produce a good crop. The more nutrients available, the better the plant will grow. Once you have chosen your spot, place your stakes to help give the plants support as they grow and produce fruit. By doing this step now, you won’t damage the roots once you have planted. •

Choose a pot or container that is at least 35L. Partly fill (roughly ¾) the pot with South-Hort Tomato Mix. Put the stake in ready for tying once planted. Loosen the root ball of the plant and place in the centre of the pot. Fill the rest of the pot with the remaining mix, and press gently around the base of the plant. Tie the tomato to the stake using plant ties (or pantyhose). Once tied, give the plant a good watering.

Once the beds are established and the plants are in, apply 100 grams per square metre every 4 weeks during the growing season. Mix well and water after application. Keep up a consistent watering routine. They’ll need plenty of water and nutrients to produce their fruit.

Apply around the base of the plant (not touching the plant) and water in well. Re-apply every 4 weeks during the growing season. Keep planting vegetables for summer NOVEMBER IS a great month to be working out in the garden. There are masses of new growth on most plants, new season vegetables are growing at a fast rate, summer flowering annuals are bursting into bloom – it’s all happening. Vegetables to be planted this month are beans (dwarf and runner), beetroot, cabbage, celery, corn, cucumber, courgettes, lettuce, pumpkin, radish, tomatoes and kumara. Water all developing vegetable plants regularly but not excessively. Ensure you stake and tie up tomatoes and remove lateral growth. Apply side dressings of fertiliser, especially to the “gross” feeders such as sweetcorn. Flowering annuals should now have outstanding displays of colour. Summer annuals to plant include; alyssum, ageratum, aster, candytuft, cornflower, cosmos, livingstone daisy, marigold, nemesia, phlox, petunias, salvias, strawflower and zinnias. Dead head (the removal of finished flowers) regularly throughout the growing season to encourage continuous blooming. This is one of the most rewarding months for cultivating roses. Plants are often covered in

Ensure you do not plant trees that grow to 8m if you only require a 2m hedge. Lawns can be fertilised in November to help create a lush dense lawn.
